It was long in the pipeline and now we can finally enjoy Kamelot's live album (and DVD). "I Am The Empire – Live From The 013" testifies to the band's performance during the event held on September 14, 2018 at the legendary venue 013 in Tilburg in the Netherlands, through which the group wanted to seal – after three studio records – the new era coincided with the change to the microphone that saw the abandonment of Roy Khan in favor of Tommy Karevik. To make the evening unique, the show was able to count on the participation of numerous guests in particular at the microphone: Alissa White-Gluz (Arch Enemy), Charlotte Wessels (Delain), Elize Ryd (Amaranthe) and Lauren Hart (Once Human) took to the stage to duet with the Swedish singer and pay tribute to Thomas Youngblood's band.
A truly excellent production curated by the usual skilled hands of Sasha Paeth (who attends the show with his guitar during the song "Ravenlight") and the use of various cameras, which follow from different angles the five musicians during the performance, make this product an ultra-professional release. An electrifying show with Tommy authentic slaughterer on stage, able to transmit charge to the audience and to anerating the crowd that immediately exalts on the notes of "Phantom Divine (Shadow Empire)" and the symphonic "Insomnia". The gothic and modern power metal of Ours is recognized miles away and the tracklist focuses heavily on the last part of the band's discography. Fortunately the new version of Kamelot is still able to say its own and the latest studio album "The Shadow Theory" confirmed the good health of the group, but during the setlist weighs not a little the absence of some historical pieces, a real blow to the heart for all the old guard of fans. No songs to represent "The Fourth Legacy" and "Epic", no track of a legendary song like "Karma"; it's really hard to understand this and this is the only flaw of a release that continues determined with the very pull "Veil Of Elysium" that skyrockets the singing of Karevik who then changes register during the sweet notes of the melancholy ballad "Under Grey Skies" duet with the good Charlotte Wessels. As if in a whirlwind of emotions, the performance proceeds through the enveloping notes of "Ravenlight" and the mighty riffs of "End Of Innocence". It's hard to resist the dark power of "March of Mephisto," introduced by Alissa White Gluz's infernal and dark uvula and the inevitable "Forever", prolonged for over fourteen minutes during which all present gave their best by singing loudly.
Everything seems really perfect and taken care of in detail: from the band's performance to the excellent sound performance to the intense participation of the audience. "I Am The Empire – Live From The 013" is a truly remarkable live testimony that perfectly represents what the Kamelots are today.
