Ierland, 18e eeuw. De jonge Redmond Barry blijft na de dood van zijn vader alleen achter met zijn moeder. Hij wordt verliefd op zijn nichtje Nora Brady en gaat een duel aan met haar verloofde Captain Quin. Omdat hij ervan overtuigd is dat hij zijn rivaal gedood heeft, gaat hij op de vlucht en neemt dienst in het Engelse leger. Hij wordt naar het front gestuurd in Duitsland. Daar verneemt hij dat Quin nog leeft en getrouwd is met Nora. Hij deserteert en wordt spion voor de Pruisische kapitein Potzdorf, maar verraadt zijn baas. Met de Ierse Chevalier de Balibari schuimt hij de Europese goksalons af. Hij ontmoet de adellijke weduwe Lady Lyndon. Ze trouwen en zo lijkt Barry Lyndon eindelijk toegang te krijgen tot de hoogste aristocratische middens.
