Founded on June 6th, 1990 as some self-styled "slower-than-usual" death metal act by Calvin Robertshaw, Aaron Stainthorpe, Andrew Craighan, and Rick Miah, the style that'd quickly evolve from My Dying Bride would mark them a pioneer of death/doom metal alongside countrymates Anathema and Paradise Lost, as well as among the first to champion the second wave of doom metal and its mixture of elements from other uber-heavy genres such as death and black metal. Furthermore, they're considered one of the first gothic metal bands, having been cited as a major influence by many of the genre's bands that came after.

The base group is rooted further back with the band Abiosis, which included guitarist Andrew Craighan & drummer Rick Miah & who'd issue a three-track demo in 1990 entitled Noxious Emanation.
