The Real Adventures of Jonny Quest was an animated television show on Cartoon
Network released from 1996 to 1997. It was also aired on TBS and TNT. A
continuation of the series from the 1960s, it featured a teenage Jonny Quest
with his friends Hadji Singh and Jessie Bannon. With father Benton Quest and
his bodyguard, Race Bannon, the clan got into all sorts of trouble with wild
science and phenomena, and everything in between. Peter Lawrence envisioned
the first season with Dick Sebast (who was later replaced by Lawrence's friend
Takashi) and they lobbied for strong ties to reality and dramatic depth.
However, he and Takashi encountered severe difficulty in trying to secure
animation contracts and were dismissed by Hanna-Barbera for taking too long;
the company had been resisting their new vision of Quest and brought in new
employees to make the second season. Hanna-Barbera had no choice but to go
through with the show since several million dollars had been poured into a
massive marketing campaign.

The writers subsequently reverted the characters to appearances more in line
with their 1960s designs. Other subtle changes in the show's presentation
and theme were incurred, including less airtime for Questworld, the show's
3D virtual reality masterminded by Takashi. The new writers injected stronger
use of paranormal themes, ghosts, and more science fiction / action. The
second season capped out the series at 52, the usual number for cartoons
before they are concluded. The initial production costs, low ratings
(despite season one's propensity to attract intelligent adult audiences),
and lackluster marketing performance were behind the cancellation. Ironically,
Fred Seibert and other producers were dismissed themselves after Turner's
merger with Time Warner. Peter Lawrence continues to write novels, short
stories, and children's programming while the second season team have
continued working with Cartoon Network.
