Dire Straits Albums
Collection 1978-2018

Dire Straits (1977-1995) was een Britse rockband met als ver-
uit bekendste lid zanger-gitarist-songwriter Mark Knopfler. De
band is onder andere bekend geworden met nummers als Sultans 
of Swing, Private Investigations, Brothers in Arms en Money for 
Nothing. De band had meteen grote successen met zijn debuut-
album Dire Straits en de single Sultans of Swing. In 1985 ver-
scheen Brothers in Arms, een van de eerste volledig digitaal 
opgenomen platen. Het album is met 269 weken in de Neder-
landse Album Top 100 het langst genoteerde album aller tijden,
 al zijn dit geen aaneengesloten weken. Na 1995 heeft Dire 
Straits niets nieuws meer uitgegeven en nog eenmaal opgetreden.
Dire Straits en Mark Knopfler verkochten samen meer dan 120 
miljoen albums en singles. In Nederland verkocht de band ruim
2,5 miljoen platen. Dire Straits debuteerde in een tijdperk waarin 
de punkmuziek zeer populair was. Dat de rockband als buiten-
beentje toch succesvol werd, ligt volgens velen aan het unieke 
geluid van Mark Knopfler en zijn verfijnde gitaarspel. Het blad 
Rolling Stone plaatste Knopfler op plaats 27 in de lijst van 100 
beste gitaristen aller tijden. De band werd in het begin nog aan-
gezien als new wave-band maar dat veranderde al snel met het 
debuutalbum Dire Straits. Alhoewel de band altijd in het genre 
rock heeft gespeeld, kan de muziek van Dire Straits in twee tijds-
vakken worden ingedeeld; voor 1980 en na 1980. Voor 1980 
werden er simpele muziekteksten geschreven en de nummers 
waren kort. De nummers gingen over de belevenissen van Mark 
Knopfler in de steden Newcastle en Leeds. In 1980 werd er een 
nieuwe bezetting neergezet die meer succes moest gaan hebben. 
De band ging vervolgens in het volgende album, Making Movies, 
experimenteren met langere nummers en complexere teksten. 
Het werd een enorm succes en de band zou deze muziekstijl 
de rest van zijn verdere carrière behouden.
