In een nabije toekomst wordt de aarde aangevallen door buitenaardse wezens, waar geen enkele militaire macht tegen opgewassen is. Majoor William Cage (Tom Cruise) is een officier die nog nooit een oorlogsfront van dichtbij gezien heeft, totdat hij betrokken raakt bij een zelfmoordmissie.
Hij sneuvelt binnen enkele minuten en belandt vervolgens op raadselachtige wijze in een timeloop, waarin hij steeds opnieuw hetzelfde gevecht moet leveren en elke keer weer de dood vindt. Maar na elk gevecht kan Cage meer tegenstand bieden aan zijn tegenstanders,
mede dankzij de hulp van Special Forces strijder Rita Vrataski (Emily Blunt). Met elk gevecht tegen de ruimtewezens, komen Cage en Rita een stap dichter bij het verslaan van de vijand.
