Dit is de eerste Doctor Who serie nadat deze  (na 16 jaar!) weer werd opgestart door de BBC in 2005.

Nadat er 16 jaar lang geen nieuwe afleveringen van de serie gemaakt waren, zond BBC One op 26 maart 2005 de eerste aflevering in een nieuwe reeks uit. Deze werd geproduceerd door de televisieproducent Russel T. Davies. Anders dan in de oorspronkelijke serie zijn de afleveringen, op enkele dubbelafleveringen na, opzichzelfstaande avonturen, en heeft iedere aflevering een titel.

De Doctor werd in de eerste reeks van de nieuwe serie (reeks 27 in totaal) vertolkt door Christopher Eccleston. Vanaf de kerstaflevering van 2005 werd hij opgevolgd door David Tennant. Als elfde in de reeks nam acteur Matt Smith de rol in 2010 over. Smith was meteen de jongste acteur die The Doctor mocht spelen. Tegelijkertijd volgde Steven Moffat Davies op als eindproducent.
