Fado, the folk music of Portugal, has been enjoying a revival recently; perhaps its trademarked saudade, or longing suffused with melancholy, is appropriate for a year of losses. Mariza, arguably the reigning queen of the genre, will release an album of songs by the original Queen of Fado, Amália Rodrigues, in November. 

Rodrigues is also a touchstone for a young pretender to the throne, Sara Correia, who grew up in a Fado-singing family steeped in old records. At the age of 13 she triumphed in the venerable competition, the Grande Noite do Fado, and then studied with the performers of the Casa de Linhares, one of Lisbon’s premier venues.  Do Coração is her second album, and if delivered from the heart it is also a polished piece of work. 

Correia is joined by her usual musicians: Ivo Costa on restrained drums; Bernardo Couto on Portuguese guitar, and producer Diogo Clemente on everything else, from bass to guitar to synthesisers so tasteful as to be imperceptible.
