Post Description

Johann Joseph Fux (Hinterfeld, Styria, 1660 – Vienna, 1741) overcame his humble origins brilliantly, forging a splendid career for himself as a musician. Born into a family of peasant farmers, he ultimately attained the position of Kapellmeister at the Habsburg court in Vienna, a post that he maintained for almost thirty years, from 1713 through to his death. He thus worked under the Holy Roman Emperors Leopold I, Joseph I and Charles VI, all of whom cultivated a passion for music.
Not much is known about Fux’s education as a musician. At the beginning of the 1680s he was certainly in Graz, where he studied composition at both the University (1689) and at the Jesuit Ferdinandeum (1682). Later, around 1687, he had the chance to study under Bernardo Pasquini in Italy, where he gained further skill in composition as well as focusing on harpsichord and organ technique.
During the course of his long career, he was also appointed organist in a number of important churches, in particular at the Moritzkirche in Ingolstadt (Bavaria, 1688-1694) and the Schottenkirche in Vienna (1696-1702). At the Stephansdom (St. Stephen’s Cathedral) in Vienna, he was not only organist but also Kapellmeister (1705-1741).
