Post Description

Al Cooper (b. February 5, 1944, New York) is one of the most significant musicians of the last century. According to the research of Rolling stone magazine, twelve of the 500 albums of all times and peoples were made with the solid participation of Cooper. Music surrounded him since childhood, and Al listened to gospel, rhythm and blues, soul. One day he sat down at the piano and, without any preparation, began to play popular pieces from the early 50s. Then rock and roll came into his life, and at the age of 15, Al became the guitarist of the teenage band "Royal Teens". The group gave out a couple of significant hits ("Short shorts", "Believe me"), after which the producers began vying to invite him to other teenage bands.

Al came to grips with session work, and along the way he mastered the skills of a sound engineer. A little later, Cooper also tried his hand at songwriting. One of his first songs, "This diamond ring", co-written with Bob Brass and Irving Levine, was a hit by Gary Lewis and The Playboys. Once Al was invited to watch the Bob Dylan sessions, but it didn't work out cleanly, and after a few hours Cooper was playing "Like a rolling stone" on the organ.

By the way, during these sessions, Al met blues guitarist Mike Bloomfield, with whom he developed a long-term partnership. He also maintained a relationship with Dylan Cooper himself, worked with him in the studio and on stage, and also produced the New Morning record. From 1965 to 1967, Al was a member of a strong blues team "The Blues Project", with which he recorded three albums. Then Cooper decided to dilute rhythm and blues with wind instruments and founded the Blood, Sweat and Tears project. After releasing only one record from BST, Al left to work for Columbia records. Followed by his joint recordings with Steps Otis, Mike Bloomfield, and then took place and Cooper's solo debut, "I stand alone".

Meanwhile, the musician continued to work as a session player, and his keys could be heard on the "Rolling Stones", Jimi Hendrix, "Who" and many others. In 1972, Al moved to Atlanta, where, having founded his own label "Sounds of the South", he undertook to produce the first albums of "Lynyrd Skynyrd". His other wards during the 70s included The Tubes, BB King, Nils Lofgren and many other performers.

Noted on Harrison's album "Somewhere in England", Cooper toured again with Dylan, and then revived the "Blues project" and after a six-year break released another solo album, "Championship wrestling". Also in the 80s, Al worked for PolyGram records, collaborated with Tom Petty, Joe Walsh and created soundtracks. By the end of the decade, Cooper decided to take a short break from the music business. Just at this time, "Beastie boys" sampled his song "Flute thing" and thanks to this they sold their album with a circulation of 5,000,000 copies. Other figures from hip-hop immediately got down to business, and soon Cooper became one of the most "sampled" performers.

The artist himself returned to the stage in the early 90s. In addition to any session-producer affairs, Al found time to record a solo record. At the request of the label "MusicMasters" the album "Rekooperation" was made entirely instrumental. In 1997, Cooper moved to Boston, where he took up teaching. However, over time, this adversely affected the health of the musician (in particular, his eyesight deteriorated), and classes had to be interrupted. Having healed a little, the restless Al returned to the stage again, and in 2005 presented the world with a new disc, "Black coffee". (Last.fm)
