Archie Bell richtte in 1966 een soulgroep op nadat hij verhuisde naar Houston. Deze vriendenband  namen ze een aantal nummers op, maar toen moest Archie Bell meevechten in de oorlog in Vietnam.

 
De groep werd één van de hoofdacts van het componisten en beroemde producers duo Kenneth Gamble en Leon Huff en hun Philadelphia International Records (PIR). De groep had in het thuisland hits met "Tighten Up", "I Can't Stop Dancing", "Girl You're Too Young", "Here I Go Again", Soul City Walk" en "Everybody Have A Good Time".
In Nederland scoorde de groep in 1968 alleen een Tipparade notering met Tighten up.
 
In 1981 werd de groep ontbonden. Archie treedt nog regelmatig op vooral in de omgeving van zijn woonplaats Houston.
