3 Bats Live

▲ Geholpen door het nummer Paradise By The Dashboard 
Light werd het album Bat Out Of Hell van Meat Loaf in 1977 
een kaskraker. Naast de branie en het volumineuze stem-
geluid van Marvin Lee Aday (Meat Loafs werkelijke naam) 
was dit vooral te danken aan Jim Steinman, de componist 
die tekende voor nummers als bombastische tieneropera’s 
waarin echo’s doorklinken van Phil Spector, Bruce Spring-
steen en Richard Wagner. Zonder Steinman was Meat Loaf 
daarna nooit erg succesvol, reden voor Meat om regelmatig 
de voortdurende vetes bij te leggen voor een volgende sequel 
van Bat Out Of Hell. Alle drie de delen passeren de revue bij 
dit ambitieuze en uiterst theatrale live concert, geregistreerd 
in Canada tijdens een uitgebreide wereldtournee in 2007. De 
goed geconserveerde zanger komt (met pruik) op bij Para-
dise… en zet al snel de aanval in op de bevallige zangeres As-
pen Miller. Het is allemaal tot in de puntjes geënsceneerd en 
de band is top, maar Aday is slecht bij stem en lijkt vooral ie-
der gevoel voor muzikale timing kwijt te zijn. De ronduit arro-
gante zanger wordt op een extra dvd nog eens uitgebreid ge-
portretteerd. Kennelijk heeft hij niet door dat er gefilmd wordt 
voor zijn eigen dvd want hij maakt het de filmers alleen maar 
moeilijk. Een dubieus product dat wel prachtig werd verpakt. ▼
