Orchestral Tools – Berlin Strings EXP A Special Bows I can be utilized alone, in combination with Special Bows 2 or Berlin Strings or Symphonic Strings, or all by themselves to produce an extensive, flexible ensemble of extraordinary depth. Special Bows 1 was recorded at Berlin’s Teldex Scoring Stage, just like the other products in the Berlin Series, with every player seated in their customary orchestral roles. Decca Tree, AB omni, a selection of spots, and surround mics, among others, offer a well-balanced, spatially coherent sound that works wonderfully with other Orchestral Tools sets.
Orchestral Tools – Berlin Strings EXP A Special Bows I is a concentrated collection of unorthodox playing and articulation techniques. These unconventional methods, ranging from sul tasto’s gentle warmth to sul ponticello’s chilly edge, can elicit unique emotions and unexpectedly inspire your works. Special Bows 1 can give your arrangements unexpected nuance and depth thanks to its 8 first violins, 6 second violins, and 5 violas—all recorded in situ with several mics for a vivid, realistic soundscape.
In Special Bows 1, the unconventional playing techniques can be used to elicit particular emotions and produce unexpected expressive effects.
For a gentle, warm sound, the musician places the bow above the fingerboard’s end.
For a spooky, frosty, brittle tone that is full of harmonics, the musician bows directly next to the bridge.
With a light touch, the left hand creates glassy overtones on the bowed string.
To create a dry, percussive sound, the player knocks the strings with the back of the bow.
