Neil Young Albums
Collection 1969-2019

Neil Percival Young (Toronto (Ontario), 12 november 1945) 
is een Canadees singer-songwriter. Neil Young is een zoon 
van schrijver en journalist Scott Young en diens vrouw Edna 
"Rassy" Ragland. Hij werd geboren op 12 november 1945 om 
kwart voor zeven 's ochtends in het Toronto General Hospital.
Het gezin woonde toen in een huisje aan Brooke Avenue in 
het noorden van Toronto. Young kreeg op jonge leeftijd dia-
betes. In 1951 leed hij aan de virusziekte polio. Hij groeide op 
in Omewee, maar hij ging in New Smyrna, Florida naar de basis-
school, de Faulkner Street Elementary School. Op tienjarige 
leeftijd begon Young een bedrijfje, Neil Eggs. Hij hield kippen 
en werkte op een golfbaan om het voer te bekostigen. Hij was 
toen van plan om zich later aan het Ontario Agricultural College 
te laten opleiden tot boer. Hij had een krantenwijk en stond 's 
ochtends vroeg op om de Globe and Mail te bezorgen. Hij luis-
terde voor het slapengaan naar de radiozender 1050-CHUM
en raakte zo geïnteresseerd in muziek. In 1958 kreeg Young 
zijn eerste muziekinstrument. Het was een plastic ukelele, die 
hij voor kerstmis van zijn ouders had gekregen. Zijn eerste suc-
ces boekte Young met The Squires, een rock-'n-rollgroep, met 
verder drummer Ken Smyth, bassist Ken Koblun en slaggitarist 
Allan Bates. Deze band maakte instrumentale muziek en cover-
de popliedjes van onder andere The Shadows. The Squires oe-
fenden een paar keer per week in Smyths kelder. Young had
zelf de versterkers in elkaar gezet. Hij speelde een oranje  
Gretsch-gitaar. Bij radio-dj Bob Bradburn namen ze de single 
The Sultan op, die V Records in november 1963 uitbracht. De 
band toerde rond in de auto van Youngs moeder of in de Chrys-
ler van Smyths vader. Kenmerkend voor de muziek zijn Youngs 
hoge, onvaste falsetto en zijn afwisselend akoestische en elek-
trische gitaarspel. Allmusic-schrijver Stephen Thomas Erlewine 
onderscheidt twee stijlen in de muziek van Young: gevoelige 
folk en countryrock aan de ene kant en 'verpletterend luide' 
gitaarrock aan de andere kant.
