Beethoven - Violin Sonatas 5 and 9 - Oistrakh, Oborin

David Oistrakh, violin
Lev Oborin, piano

To my ear its usually the violin player who screws up this material, they view it as a solo project and try to take over. The piano is almost equal in importance for these sonatas and Oistrakh understands this. Both players play very well together and deliver the charm and beauty the composer intended. These sonatas have been done many times so go to youtube and audition the various players before you make your purchase, dont just go off reviews.

This recording was done in 1962 and it sounds wonderful to me. Some reviewers have complained of a muffled piano tone and this is true to a degree. The recording engineers did this to achieve a better balance for the overall sound and I think they succeeded. The piano takes the mids and low end, the violin the mids and high end. The Ibragimova/Tiberghien live performances released in 2010 have better sound to my ears and the performances are great but its 3x the price of oistrakh/oborin.
