AMORPHOUS Androgynous, the psychedelic rock-tronic supergroup created and
produced by the Future Sound Of London, release their second mix CD, A
Monstrous Psychedelic Bubble Exploding In Your Mind Vol 2 – Pagan Love
Vibrations, and duly impress.

In keeping with the critically acclaimed first volume, this second
mind-bending trip through four decades of archives also seeks to unearth the
future classics of psychedelia in its many guises.

Amorphous Androgynous consists of electronic duo Garry Cobain and Brian
Dougans (Future Sound Of London), two men with a knack for discovering and
giving new life to the best of the buried and the forgotten, and this second
volume digs deeper to take listeners on an exploratory journey through the
rich goldmine of weird and wonderful cosmic space music. They connect the
hidden past with the future.

Hence, the likes of David Holmes and Oasis run shoulders with Dungen and
Hawkwind, with the odd vocal aside from Richard Harris and Kahlil Gibran, to
create a highly trippy, even hallucogenic trip into the psychedelic that
boasts a massive 44 songs.

There’s plenty to savour, too, from Bo Diddley’s down and dirty funk rock
classic Elephant Man to Dan Sebesky’s Eastern influenced, sitar and strings
laden Guru-vin, which boasts a cinematic, Darjeeling Limited kind of quality.

Continuing the cinematic vibe, David Holmes serves a welcome reminder of his
Ocean’s trilogy work with the lively, upbeat and really quite hip What R We
Stealing, while Oasis are as trippy and spaced out (and Indian) as you’re
ever likely to hear them on the Monst. Psychedelic Bubble Mix of their recent
hit single, Falling Down. It’s actually not as successful as it should have
been.

Given the variety, scope and decade-spanning nature of the album, it’s not a
surprise that not every track resonates. While the psychedelic nature of each
track means that some are more trippy and bizarre than others.

But there are more hits and misses and, if nothing else, this will succeed in
expanding your musical horizons, while giving people plenty to talk about if
sat around a dinner table hearing each new track drop.

Of our other personal favourites, we also recommend seeking out the likes of
album opener Satt Att Se, by Dungen, and Naga Raga, from Dzyan, as well as
Ultimate Spinach’s lazy (Ballad of) The Hip Death Goddess and the sitar-laden
funky workout that is Sohail Rana’s Soul Sitars.

On CD2, meanwhile, there’s the trippy, hippy retro throwback that is
Melanie’s Lay Down (Candles In The Rain), Gunter Kallmann Chor’s original
Daydream (which has often been sampled by contemporary artists), Pearls
Before Swine’s innocent, playful Oh Dear (Miss Morse) and Amorphous
Androgynous’ own The Onion.

For our money, CD1 contains more gems and is the more commercial, less freaky
of the two, but it all adds up to a really worthwhile journey.

A Monstrous Psychedelic Bubble Exploding in Your Mind: Volume 2 is a 2009
compilation album with selections by the Amorphous Androgynous; it was
released on CD in September 2009. It is an extensive compilation mix album
featuring a wide variety of artists, selected and mixed by the duo. Pagan
Love Vibrations is the second in the series, following on from the successful
first volume Cosmic Space Music and focusses on the band's psychedelic side,
featuring everything from 60s pop to film scores and modern psychedelia.

Noel Gallagher of the band Oasis spoke very highly of the first album and got
into contact with Gaz Cobain after hearing this record and asked him if the
Amorphous Androgynous would remix the Oasis single "Falling Down" which is
also included on this album.
