Deze uit Canada afkomstige rockband trad in het begin van zijn bestaan op als begeleidingsgroep van Bob Dylan. Later werden ze op eigen kracht zeer invloedrijk als vertolkers van Americana, waarmee ze opnieuw zorgden voor het populair worden van diverse vormen van Amerikaanse traditionele muziek. Hun muziek versmolt country met folk, blues en rock’-n-roll. Kenmerkend was ook dat de heren heel veelzijdig waren met het bespelen van instrumenten.

Na het album The Last Waltz besloot The Band zichzelf als groep op te heffen en zich te richten op individuele projecten, al zagen de meesten dat toen niet als een definitief einde van de samenwerking. Ieder lid ging zijn eigen weg, al waren ze ook op elkaars albums te horen.
In 1983 kwam The Band bijna in zijn geheel weer samen, inclusief enkele nieuwe leden.
Inmiddels zijn er van de vijf originele leden nog maar twee in leven.
