‘A Different Thread’ is the transatlantic collaboration between Alicia Best from Durham, NC, USA, and Robert Jackson from Lichfield, UK. In 2018, Danny Neill reviewed their album On A Whim, in which he described the duo:

Robert Jackson is an intense young folk singer and guitarist; he’s got rockabilly hair and more aged weariness that belies the youth of that sharp young face. Alicia Best is a lush vocalist, fiddler and percussionist with a piercing vintage style and an inner steel whose boots are firmly made for stamping. 

They told us that with the pandemic came cancelled tours, with cancelled tours came cancelled visas, and we were forced to separate.  The good news is that they went into the studio before parting ways to record 11 original songs (including their new single ‘Didn’t Wanna Go’), spinning tales of love, loss, and wanderlust. With these songs, they pull from their respective roots, weaving elements of blues, country, and British and Appalachian folk into a timeless, minimalist sound. Their new album, Call of the Road, is released on 1st September.

‘Didn’t Wanna Go’ was written at a time when we had to part ways; we did not know exactly how long it would be before we saw each other again; it was an emotional time for us both.  

The song deals with the feelings of loneliness, uncertainty, and having to surrender to the inevitable goodbye. It is set to a slow walking rhythm as if the song itself is soldiering on at an almost reluctant pace.
We shot the music video in Bristol with the Bristol Blues Dancers.  The video was shot in one take, between scattered showers.  We filmed right before Alicia had to return to the USA due to covid restrictions, and the sentiment of the song was played out again, in real-time.
