All in the Family gaat over een blank Amerikaans arbeidersgezin dat in Queens, New York woont. De patriarch is Archie Bunker (O'Connor), een uitgesproken, bekrompen man, schijnbaar bevooroordeeld tegen iedereen die niet is zoals hij of zijn idee van hoe mensen zouden moeten zijn. Archie's vrouw Edith (Jean Stapleton) is lief en begripvol, hoewel enigszins naïef en ongeschoold. Haar man noemt haar soms minachtend "dingbat".
