WWF – Royal Rumble 1992 (DVD5) (Video_ts)

http://prowrestlingmatters.wordpress.com/category/promotions/wwfe/1992/

1. The New Foundation (Owen Hart & Jim Neidhart) vs. The Orient Express (Kato & Tanaka) w/Mr. Fuji

Bret Hart has since went on to have a successful singles career which left Jim Neidhart lost in the shuffle for a while. Fortunately up and comer and brother-in law Owen Hart had his back. Good opener with a great wrestling pedigree. Not as strong as the Rockers/Express match a year earlier but still solid.
Grade: B

2. WWF Intercontinental Championship
The Mountie (c) w/Jimmy Hart vs. Rowdy Roddy Piper

Mountie pulled a huge upset and defeated Bret Hart to become the IC champion a week earlier. To be honest this match was not that good but the Piper shenanigans & charisma made it quite fun to watch.
Grade: D+

3. The Beverly Brothers (Beau & Blake) w/The Genius vs. The Bushwhackers (Luke & Butch) w/Jameson

Jameson is a dorky like character who managed the whackers for a very short time. This match was pure disaster, all 15 minutes of it. The only good thing about this was Bobby Heenan’s commentary and jokes regarding Jameson.
Grade: F

4. WWF Tag Team Championship
The Legion of Doom (Road Warrior Hawk & Road Warrior Animal (c) vs. The Natural Disasters (Earthquake & Typhoon) w/Jimmy Hart

Nothing special was provided here except for the cosmetic attractions provided by both teams. I can’t recall a good Natural Disasters match at all which is a shame since I like them a lot.
Grade: D

5. WWF Championship
Royal Rumble Match
Participants: British Bulldog, Ted Dibiase, Ric Flair, Jerry Saggs, Haku, Shawn Michaels, Tito Santana, The Barbarian, Kerry Von Erich, Repo Man, Greg Valentine, Big Bossman, Nikolai Volkoff, Hercules, Roddy Piper, Jake Roberts, Jim Duggan, IRS, Jimmy Snuka, The Undertaker, Randy Savage, The Bezerker, Virgil, Col. Mustafa, Rick Martel, Hulk Hogan, Skinner, Sgt. Slaughter, Sid Justice & The Warlord

This rumble will always be special for a number of reasons. First of all, this is the first and only Rumble match where the WWF title was awarded to the winner as it was held vacant over a controversial change a month earlier. Second, the participants in this rumble at the time were the best of the best and thus it was dubbed the biggest star powered rumble of all time. Third, Ric Flair participates in his first rumble and showcases his amazing endurance at age 42. 4. Bobby Heenan doing perhaps his greatest work as color commentator in his multi decade career. Many consider this the greatest rumble of all time, I honestly don’t see why not.
Grade: A

Final Thoughts:

The undercard as usual is less than special as like always the rumble match as a whole is the main attraction. However this Rumble is very highly regarded by wrestlers and fans alike as the best of all time. This one definitely made the show worthwhile. I heavily recommend this show top to bottom with the high entertainment value.
