Blues.

The Fatalist,” Buffalo Nichols’ latest record, is a vehicle for the artist’s unique experimentation within the blues. Nichols, hailing from Milwaukee, WI, has managed to blend traditional blues elements with contemporary influences with the album, resulting in a somewhat experimental outing that still sounds reverent. 

Buffalo Nichols, the moniker of guitarist, songwriter, and vocalist Carl Nichols, represents a distinctive voice in contemporary blues. Raised in Milwaukee’s North end, Nichols found hope and inspiration in his guitar, using music as a tool for self-discovery and inner life.  

Now as a professional recording artist, Nichols showcases a dedication to preserving the true essence of blues while infusing it with his gritty and contemporary approach to both music and lyrics. This stands out quite prominently on The Fatalist, an offering that challenges the conventional boundaries of blues music, infusing it with electronic elements, samples, and synth textures. 

The opening track, “Cold Black Stare,” immediately sets the tone and mood, with its biting acoustic slide and social commentary-filled lyrics making for a strong start to the album. Next, Nichols’ reinterpretation of the century-old gospel blues standard “You’re Gonna Need Somebody On Your Bond” comes across as both unique and traditional, with the layered electronic ambiance and voice sampling adding depth and nuance to his voice and guitar.  

“Love is All”, on the other hand, plays out more safely, paying homage to the traditional front-porch blues style, while the emotional weight of the fiddle-infused “Turn Another Stone” is gripping and palpable. Combining country influences with poignant lyricism, it showcases Nichols’ ability to blend dark, complex storytelling with an effervescent musical structure.  

Nichols’ deep, distinctively low voice especially shines on “The Fatalist Blues”. A blend of haunting slide guitar lines, modern R&B beats and thoughtful lyrics, it might just be the set’s finest composition.

Concluding the album, “This Moment”, a duet with singer Samantha Rise, is an amalgam of biting acoustic guitar, phantasmagorical fiddle melodies and evocative vocal performances.

In a way, The Fatalist might pose a challenge upon initial listening. With its notable lack of bouncy riffs, blazing solos and catchy hooks, in addition to an unorthodox mixture of influences, it might be somewhat difficult to assimilate at first. However, for those in the mood for a mostly acoustic blues outing with a dark, introspective ambiance, this album proves to be a perfect fit. Its brooding atmosphere, electronic elements, and deeply personal lyrics should appeal to those who want to delve into the complexities of the human experience accompanied by a contemplative musical framework. 

All in all, The Fatalist by Buffalo Nichols is a commendable affair that pushes the boundaries of blues music without losing its essence. While not properly revolutionary, the album offers a refreshing take on the genre, appealing to those who seek a blend of tradition and innovation within the blues sonic landscape.
