Post Description

Eindelijk weer eens onvervalste Schotse folk.

With a decade of producing work that showcased aspects of life on the borders, as a lockdown project, Well Road Productions commissioned a new music celebrating the poetry of 19th Century border poet Will H Ogilvie. THE LAND WE LOVE brings together performances of these new songs by four traditional musicians. Award winning singer and guitarist Ian Bruce, fiddler and Niel Gow authority Pete Clark, accordion player Ian Lothian and Blazin Fiddles founder Bruce MacGregor.

“Ho! For The Blades of Harden” is a spirited opener, the percussion recalling charging Riever’s horses on a moonlit raid. The band do soothing vocals too, with songs like “Ettrick” and “The Brown Burns”, there is beauty, with rich vocal harmonies, a great melody and fine playing from the quartet. The pulsing tunes of “On Cheviot’s Shoulder”, “Song For Ettrick”, the story of the aforementioned Valley, home of the Poet’s family and “The Hoofs Of The Horses” are so strong and the words so lyrical when sung, its hard to reconcile that these started as poems. “A Mother’s Thought” with its gentle and subtle guitar and accordion melody is a light as air marvel. The pride and hope of parents shine out of this delicate song, with its instrumental interludes strengthening the powerful words. Similarly delicate, but infused with pride is the rousing “North Country” and “Teviot” heartfelt hymns to the hill country and its river beloved by Ogilvie. “The Raiders” is stirring Folk Rock, a historic Riever’s tale carried on snarling guitar and fiddle. “At Sunset” marries rich words, an interesting vocal arrangement and some engaging playing. Set to music “Romany Toon” poem becomes a reflective county song with a rolling rhythm. The tempo and rhythm of “The Road To Roberton” evokes the poet’s favourite walk with its jaunty feel. “A Scotch Night” is a slightly tongue in cheek tale of drink infused fun and camaraderie among relaxed ex-pats. Carried by a fine vocal and guitar part “The Land We Love” is an anthemic and decidedly misty eyed look at the landscape and people of the borders so celebrated by Ogilvie.

So potent and powerful is the fruit of this marriage it’s hard to believe this is the first time or that it will be the last.
