Post Description

Acoustic, vocals, Belgium.

The world and music of Cabane is not simple, but the beauty of Brulée is undeniable. Four years after Grande est la Maison, Belgian writer/composer Thomas Jean Henri has crafted another unimaginably beautiful volume of songs, sung by This Is The Kit’s Kate Stables and Tunng’s Sam Genders. Using string arrangements created by Sean O’Hagan of The High Llamas, this second volume continues the fragile beauty established on the first album, creating new pathways through the head and heart.

As odd as it sounds, there’s a fragility to the strength of Stables’ vocal on All We Could Do. The piano and strings of O’Hagan reinforce these moments, leading to a song that builds on the fragility of an acoustic guitar. It builds subtly, enabling the song to use an underwater metaphor to reveal the gentle passion in the lyrics:

“All we could do/ Forever blue/
You breathe for me/
I’ll breathe for you/
Light and darkness swim through the night/
Your soft hand in mine.”

There is a palpable beauty in those moments.

While the fragrance of love is clearly intoxicating, it is also mysterious and fleeting. Just as a flower blooms, it also dies, with the buds fading and falling. This is the mystery of In Parallel, where the music adds layers of uncertainty to the guitar and strings with a repeated synth phrase fighting with melancholy as undertones of discomfort head toward a crescendo. Stables sings, “My love/ This may never be/ Strange as it seems/ My cold black fears.”

Taking the lead vocal on Amour(s), Genders outlines the problematic nature of relationships. “My amour/ You never walk away/ My amour/ You never really stay/ My amour.” Amidst the minor key piano, the heartbreak is all too painfully real. Singing Henri’s lyrics, Genders’ pain and confusion are all too pronounced. This is love at its most painful.

There is beauty to be found even as things fall apart. Such is the fragility of love, and the strings of O’Hagan seem to be a perfect tool for illustrating both the beauty and uncertainty that exists in that world. He is able to instil both the allure and insecurity that reside inside the heart, feeding both beasts. Listening to Melodies of Love, one is able to look inside the soul as Stables sings of the uncertainty, “We never learned of love/ She took us in the night/ Forever and ever to fall like this/ Could be the perfect lie.”

Through Brulée, Thomas Jean Henri’s cabane guides us through the splendour and the heartache, the good and bad, the happy and the sad, a reflection of who we are as people in the 21st century.
