1957 - Indiana Jones ontmoet de jonge Mutt Williams (Shia LaBeouf) die de avontuurlijke archeoloog een voorstel doet: Als hij Mutt helpt op zijn missie, dan zou Indiana Jones een van de meest spectaculaire vondsten in de archeologische geschiedenis vinden - de 'Crystal Skull van Akator' - een legendarisch object van betovering, bijgeloof en angst.
