Post Description

Singer-songwriter, Americana.

This work unveils reflective & sensitive insightful feelings about life, love & the stages we negotiate to grasp the changes & stages our journeys undergo. That’s how this music’s been described. It’s not a mainstream Nashville either.

Singer-songwriter Scott Sean White put together 10 intriguing optimistic & poignant songs produced by Grammy-nominated Dave Brainard for Even Better On the Bad Days (Drops Jan 19–Independent/36:00). Vocally, Scott has a commanding tone & even with a simple song like “Pulling Weeds,” a creative mind may suggest a metaphor. The weeds may be straightening out his life, “taking care of business” & getting rid of things that weigh him down. If so, that’s fine songwriting. Things are often made clearer by talking metaphorically. People understood Dylan’s “Blowin’ In the Wind,” & “A Hard Rain’s Gonna Fall” didn’t they?

With some, Sean sings in a spacious folky manner – a Gordon Lightfoot, John Denver, even a John Hartford. Folk tales with good down-to-earth homespun words. There’s little pontificating or heavy-handed noodling with the compositions. At times, White will sing in a conversational manner born out of experience, imbued with hope, aside from heartaches & just how things happen — because they do.

As for the more religious contour of “God Is Good,” there’s no Bible-thumping but the lyric attached to a story expressed through a blistering soulful gospel song. It comes from a place close to home. Scott lost two brothers 12 days apart in 2021. Many, many listeners will relate to this one. Scott doesn’t let go as he segues into “People” with its uplifting melancholy structure that’s also a sensitive narration. “We’re such a mess, but ain’t we beautiful people?” One of the best lyrics I’ve heard in a while.

There isn’t a weak song in the bunch, not a sour note or blemish on a pear. All tunes are appetizers. They build upon each other as the CD’s pacing enthusiastically projects each idea. If you listen hard enough it’s as if each song is one long number segueing brilliantly into another. The compositions have relevance. No filler. Great album, period.

Highlights – “Pulling Weeds,” “Hope You Never Do,” “God Is Good,” “People,” “Keeper,” the intense “Not The Year,” “Small World,” a great song with banjo support “Same Street,” “Just Not Today” & “12 Notes & 26 Letters.”
