Folk.

Ross Ainslie, as you probably know already, is an astonishing musician and composer (and the nicest of people, too), and you may also know the merry hyperactivity and virtuoso guitar and melodeon playing of Tim Edey.

They have played together quite a bit lately and I’m happy that some of their simply amazing live stuff is on youtube for you to wonder at; check out, for example this doozy. The communication is there, the wonderful playing is there, the humor is there – and the joy of playing this music, it all comes across without words.

Diad is their first full album together and, I don’t know how else to say it: it is a joy, through and through – just look at that goofy album cover for starters ��

Mostly it’s just Ross’ flutes and pipes with Tim’s guitar and melodeon, and who needs more? Mr. Donald Shaw guests on a couple of tracks but this really is a two-man show.

The musicianship is 110 % (there’s some truly stunning stuff here), the tunes (some by Ross, some by Tim, some loaned tunes) range from wild “let’s blow the dust off” blasts (the opening Lunny, by a certain D. Lunny, of course) to groovy pieces like Dad and to the tender and beautiful (Lullaby for Mel).

Diad is a super feel good package of music that feels more like a warm chat between good friends than notes and time signatures. I really haven’t taken a closer look at the tunes themselves with any analytical ear; I prefer to join the chat and go with the flow in this one. For once, the “what’s this music made of?” part of me keeps it mouth shut and just has a good time.

And you know what? Shit times like these we’re living now need music like this. I mean it. Go listen to Diad, it will do you a world of good and warm your soul.
